Brief history
Established in 1962, the UNILAG Library has grown alongside the university itself. Initially housed in a temporary location, the library moved to its permanent site at Akoka, Yaba, in 1965. Over the years, the library has seen continual expansion in both its physical footprint and its collection.
A pivotal moment came in 1973 when the Lagos State Publication Law designated the UNILAG Library as a legal deposit library for all publications originating within Lagos State. This designation significantly bolstered the library’s collection of local and regional materials.
The library has also embraced technological advancements, transitioning from a primarily print-based collection to a robust collection of electronic resources. The online library catalog and digital tools provide convenient access to information resources for students, faculty, and researchers, both on and off campus.
In 2013, plans were unveiled for a new, ultra-modern library building. This 15-story facility will house a 500-seater auditorium, specialist libraries for all faculties, and cutting-edge technological infrastructure. The completion of this new building will solidify the UNILAG Library’s position as a leading center for academic excellence in Nigeria and beyond.
