The College of Medicine, University of Lagos, on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, held a tribute to honour and celebrate the legacies of late Emeritus Professor Olusoga Adekunle Sofola.
The solemn event which was held at the Old Great Hall of the College, was graced by prominent figures from every strata of the society including the Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University; Professor Ibironke Olatunji-Bello; Vice-Chancellor, Eko UNIMED, Professor G.O.G. Awosanya; Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo among others. They joined the immediate and extended family members, colleagues and friends of Professor Sofola to celebrate his life and achievements especially as a distinguished professor of Physiology which spanned over four decades.
The Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS was also on ground, along with leading members of the university management team. In her remarks, she praised the late Professor Sofola for his dedication to excellence and his role in fostering good relations within the academic community. Prof Ogunsola said the deceased will be missed and forever revered for his contributions to Physiology.


The event featured heartfelt speeches and tributes from family members, colleagues, and former students who spoke of his mentorship and humane approach to leadership. Prayers were also offered for the family and colleagues to bear the loss.


Born on January 24, 1947, the late Professor Sofola began his academic career as a lecturer II in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, University of Lagos in 1973. He became a Professor of Physiology in 1984.
Professor Sofola held numerous academic and administrative positions within UNILAG, including Head of the Department of Physiology, 1983–84; Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, 1986–1990; Provost, College of Medicine, 994–1998; and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Research) from 2003 to 2007.
He served as Acting Vice Chancellor, Olabisi Onabanjo University from 2009 to 2010 and the Vice Chancellor of EkoUNIMED.
Emeritus Professor Olusoga Adekunle Sofola is survived by his wife, Dr (Mrs.) Yemi Sofola, children and grandchildren.
