UNILAG Francofest 2.0: Alumni Inspire Students with Practical Career Insights

The Department of European Languages and Integration Studies at the University of Lagos held its Francofest 2.0 celebration on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Afe Babalola Hall.

The lively event gathered alumni who are successfully applying their French language proficiency in various Francophone countries.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Akanbi Mudasiru Ilupeju, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, welcomed guests and students, expressing his deep affection for the French language, which he has both studied and taught.

The Acting Head of the Department European Languages and Integration Studies, Dr. John Folaju, formally welcomed attendees and declared the event open.

In her welcome address, the Staff Adviser, Dr. Olusola Oguntola, extended her gratitude to alumni and guests for their moral and financial contributions, acknowledging their crucial role in making the event a reality. She also recognized the sponsors and urged all present to remain connected to their alma mater and to give support when needed.

Dr. Olugbenga Omoloba, an alumnus of the department, delivered a keynote address highlighting the transformative impact of learning French on his life and entrepreneurial journey. He emphasized that acquiring a foreign language not only improves communication but also opens doors to business opportunities. He described language as a powerful means of preserving cultural heritage and encouraged students to master French while developing unique skills that will distinguish them in their future careers.

In her keynote address, Mrs. Victoria Odusegun, the second speaker also an alumnus, urged students to look beyond conventional approaches to learning foreign languages. She emphasized that mastering a language like French can open doors to diverse career paths, including book translation, tech and software instruction, global career progression, International travel opportunities

To maximize these benefits, Mrs. Odusegun encouraged students to showcase their language certifications on their CVs, maintain fluency through consistent use, engage in continuous practice and build connections through networking.
She concluded by urging students to embrace French as a valuable asset that can expand their horizons and create new professional possibilities

During the panel session, three alumni, Mr. Zubair Badmus, Mr. Valor Iduh, and Mrs. Victoria Odusegun, shared inspiring stories of how proficiency in French has enriched their personal and professional lives. They stressed that while learning French is valuable, combining it with additional skills significantly enhances career prospects.

The speakers shared the challenges they encountered while studying French, such as limited interest, scarce learning resources, and difficulties in developing fluency in listening and speaking. Despite these obstacles, they emphasized that a strong willingness to learn remains one of the most valuable traits for students preparing to enter the professional world.
They encouraged students to enhance their French language proficiency by acquiring complementary skills, including volunteering and staying open to new opportunities.

One of the speakers highlighted key strategies for success, including: developing additional skills to boost employability, being proactive and receptive to new experiences, and prioritising personal growth and striving for excellence in every pursuit.

With these insights, the alumni offered students practical guidance for building successful careers, urging them to be shining lights in the respective industries where they would find themselves.
