The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Students Forum of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), rolled out the drums for its second symposium on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
The event which was held at the Design Studio, Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), had the theme: Built to Evolve, Adapt, Grow and Thrive in Mechanical Engineering. It also served as a reunion of some sort with old students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering turning up in their number to be part of the outing and also lend their voices to the evolving dynamics in the field and practice of Mechanical Engineering in Nigeria.


Resource persons included: Engineers Seun Faluyi, Bayo Erinle and Temitope Okunoren-Makindipe. They all took turns to share their thoughts and counsel the students on the theme of the event.





Wisdom nuggets for those in attendance included the need for them to network, be embodiments of virtues, embrace mentorship, be creative and cultivate interpersonal, people management as well as problem-solving skills.
There were remarks by the Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UNILAG, Professor Adekunle Adelaja who was represented by Dr. Olabode Olakoyejo. He congratulated the students on the second symposium, implored them to reflect on the theme of the event and apply their acquired knowledge to develop solutions to contemporary challenges.


The event featured a panel session with industry experts drawn from various sectors such as Engineers Samuel Shokunbi (Manufacturing), Titilayo Sodipo (Automobile), Dr. Manasseh Shitta (Energy), Olasunkanmi Bello (Aerospace) and Ibrahim Ogundeko (Air Conditioning). They all took turns to speak on contemporary issues relating to their areas of specialization.






The panelists unanimously underscored the need for every student studying Mechanical Engineering to deepen their interests, acquire skills in diverse areas, build competence, grow capacity, immerse themselves in the job and braze up for the impacts of evolving technologies.
Other activities at the NIMechE UNILAG Students’ Symposium 2.0 included the showcase of various milestones by the students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UNILAG as well as unveiling and presentations of awards to deserving individuals and winners of the Innovate Local 3D Printing and Prototyping Challenge.
