A delegation from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP), University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to strengthen ties in research, policy development, and service delivery within Lagos’ transport and urban planning sector.
Led by the Head of Department, Dr. Taofik Salau, the team included Prof. Wale Alade, Dr. Abubakar Olaseni, Dr. Victor Onifade, and Miss Damilola Odekunle. During the visit, the delegation commended LAMATA’s proactive measures against sexual harassment, particularly its adoption of the SHECAN Tool, a practical toolkit designed to help commuters, especially women and vulnerable groups, as well as transport workers and regulators, prevent, identify, and respond to sexual harassment in public transport.
Prof. Wale Alade, speaking on behalf of the team, also congratulated LAMATA’s Managing Director, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, on her recent appointment as Chair of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Africa Division (2025–2027), describing the achievement as a source of pride for Lagos and Nigeria.
In her response, Engr. Akinajo expressed appreciation for the visit and underlined LAMATA’s openness to meaningful collaborations with the University. She stressed that partnerships of this nature would not only enrich research but also translate into more efficient and inclusive transport services for residents of Lagos.
The visit, according to the URP team, underscores UNILAG’s unwavering commitment to fostering Town-Gown relationships that bridge academic expertise with real-world challenges, ensuring that research and knowledge generated within the University contribute to practical solutions and sustainable development across Lagos and beyond.
