A student of the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Okeke Johnpaul Ebubechukwu has earned continental recognition at the Artificial Intelligence and Antimicrobial Resistance (AI & AMR) Symposium 2026.
The symposium was hosted by the African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data Intensive Sciences at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Held from March 16 to 17, 2026, the event brought together leading researchers, innovators, and scholars exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and public health, particularly in tackling antimicrobial resistance.
At the symposium, Okeke presented his research project titled “AMRScan: A Large Language Model Framework for Real-Time Synthesis of Global Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Emerging Threat Detection.” The project was ranked among the top seven percent of over 600 submissions, highlighting its originality, technical depth, and global relevance.
In a highly competitive field featuring participants from top institutions across Africa and beyond, Okeke emerged second overall in the Best Poster Presentation category, marking a significant academic achievement.
This accomplishment reflects the growing impact of students from the University of Lagos in advancing innovative research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and global health.
