UNILAG Honours Arthur Mbanefo’s Legacy as Kola Adesina Calls for Action-Driven Leadership in Africa

The challenge before Africa is no longer the absence of ideas; it is the courage to act on them.

That was the resounding message on Thursday, June 11, 2026, as the University of Lagos (UNILAG) hosted the 7th Arthur Mbanefo Lecture Series and 1st Memorial Lecture in honour of late Chief Arthur Christopher Mbanefo, MFR.

Organised under the auspices of the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre (AMDRC), this year’s event featured a keynote lecture titled, ” Illuminating Africa: From Rhetoric to Results – The Why, The How, The Who and The When, ” delivered by Group Managing Director of Sahara Energy Group, Mr. Kola Adesina, MFR, FNSE.

The lecture served as a celebration of an extraordinary life and a call to confront one of Africa’s greatest challenges: translating promise into measurable progress.

Distinguished Gathering of Leaders and Stakeholders
The event attracted an impressive audience of statesmen, captains of industry, academics, and public intellectuals, underscoring its growing importance as a platform for national discourse.

Among those in attendance were Senator Bode Olajumoke; veteran journalist and Publisher of Vanguard Newspaper, Pa Sam Amuka; former Attorney-General of the Federation, Dr. Bayo Ojo, SAN; former Chairman of MTN Nigeria, Pa Damian Okoro; members of the University Management; AMDRC Board members; academics; alumni; scholars; and other distinguished personalities from across the country.

Honouring the Legacy of Arthur Mbanefo
The significance of the occasion extended beyond the lecture itself.

For the first time since the passing of Chief Arthur Mbanefo, the annual gathering convened without the physical presence of the renowned diplomat, statesman, and philanthropist whose generosity led to the establishment of the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre.

In her welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, reflected on the enduring legacy of the late benefactor, whose commitment to knowledge, education, and national development continues to impact lives long after his passing.

Describing the event as both a celebration and a remembrance, she noted that Chief Mbanefo’s ideals remain deeply embedded in the Centre he helped establish.

According to her, AMDRC has evolved into a thriving hub for scholarship, digital innovation, and intellectual engagement within the University, thanks to his vision and philanthropy.

Professor Ogunsola also acknowledged the unwavering support of the Arthur Mbanefo family, describing their continued partnership with the University as a reflection of the values that inspired the Centre’s establishment.

As participants observed a minute’s silence in his honour, the atmosphere shifted from solemn reflection to renewed appreciation for a life devoted to service, diplomacy, and nation-building.

Sustaining a Legacy of Scholarship and Excellence
Chairman of the AMDRC Board, Mr. Ernest Ebi, MFR, FCIB, echoed similar sentiments, describing Chief Mbanefo’s legacy as one that continues to inspire excellence, scholarship, and purposeful leadership.

According to him, the Centre remains one of the most enduring symbols of the late diplomat’s belief in education as a transformative force capable of shaping society and empowering future generations.

Similarly, Chairman of the Occasion, Dr. Segun Aina, OFR, praised the late elder statesman for a life of service and impact while commending the University of Lagos for sustaining a lecture platform that has become an important avenue for discussions on issues of national, continental, and global significance.

Dr. Aina noted that universities remain critical drivers of societal progress, not merely through ideas and research but through their ability to provide practical solutions to contemporary challenges. He therefore called for increased support for higher education institutions and stronger partnerships among academia, government, and industry.

He also acknowledged Sahara Group’s support through its Make-A-Difference (MAD) initiative and described the lecture theme as timely and highly relevant to Africa’s developmental aspirations.

Kola Adesina’s Call for Purposeful Leadership

Delivering the keynote lecture, Group Managing Director of Sahara Energy Group, Mr. Kola Adesina, MFR, FNSE, painted a compelling portrait of a continent rich in potential but often constrained by weak institutions, inconsistent execution, and missed opportunities.

Drawing on the Chinese proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is now,” Adesina challenged Africans to move beyond endless conversations and embrace purposeful action.

According to him, Africa’s future will be determined not by the number of conferences held or declarations issued, but by the strength of its institutions and the willingness of its citizens to take responsibility for the continent’s transformation.

With Africa home to the world’s youngest population, Adesina argued that investing in people, creating opportunities, and strengthening institutions are no longer policy options but urgent imperatives. “A young population is not automatically an asset,” he noted. “It is a potential.”

He warned that demographic advantage could quickly become a demographic burden if education, employment, and inclusion fail to keep pace with population growth. Yet, his message remained one of optimism.

Learning from Rwanda’s Transformation
Drawing inspiration from Rwanda’s post-genocide recovery, Adesina highlighted how nations can overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges through visionary leadership, collective resolve, and a shared commitment to rebuilding.

For the distinguished UNILAG alumnus, Africa’s transformation depends on replacing excuses with execution, dependency with innovation, and rhetoric with measurable outcomes. He stressed that the continent can no longer afford the luxury of waiting but must commit itself to the hard work of building the future it seeks.

Interactive Session and Recognition of Excellence
The event featured an engaging interactive session during which participants shared perspectives on governance, leadership, youth development, infrastructure, and economic growth across the continent.

A major highlight of the occasion was the presentation of commemorative plaques to the Chairman of the Occasion, Dr. Segun Aina, OFR, and the Guest Lecturer, Mr. Kola Adesina, MFR, FNSE, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to leadership, innovation, and national development.
