The University of Lagos (UNILAG), through its Student Affairs Division (DSA), has organised a sensitisation programme for students aspiring to leadership positions across departments, faculties, halls of residence, and Students’ Union (ULSU) ahead of the forthcoming student elections.
The interactive session, held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, was led by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Olumuyiwa Johnson Agunsoye, alongside other officials of the Division. The programme was designed to acquaint prospective candidates with the provisions of the newly introduced student constitution and electoral guidelines that will govern the upcoming elections.

Addressing students at the Nurudeen Alao Auditorium, Professor Agunsoye explained that the sensitisation exercise became necessary following the adoption of the new constitution, which provides the framework for student governance and electioneering activities within the institution.
He noted that continuous engagement between university management and student leaders is essential to promoting transparency, accountability, and a seamless electoral process.
The Dean urged aspirants to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and traditions of the University of Lagos, stressing the importance of integrity, discipline, and respect for institutional regulations throughout their campaigns and eventual tenure in office.

He also reminded students of the University’s procedures for organising campus events and activities, expressing concern over the growing practice of submitting event approval requests at short notice.
According to him, requests submitted less than 24 hours or only a few days before scheduled events may not receive approval, as the Student Affairs Division requires adequate time to review proposals and engage organisers where necessary.

Professor Agunsoye further cautioned students against actions capable of tarnishing the University’s reputation, particularly involvement in cult-related activities and other forms of misconduct.
Also speaking at the programme, Deputy Dean II of Student Affairs, Dr. Iyanda Ridwaullahi Abdul Ganniy, admonished aspiring leaders to steer clear of unethical practices, including cyberbullying, bribery, abuse of office, and other forms of indiscipline.
He emphasised that confidentiality, integrity, accountability, and discretion are critical qualities of effective leadership, encouraging students to uphold these values both during their campaigns and while serving in office.
Earlier, Deputy Dean I of Student Affairs, Dr. Omowunmi J. Ogunleye, provided detailed guidance on the eligibility requirements for elective positions. She highlighted key constitutional provisions governing qualification for office and urged aspirants to familiarise themselves thoroughly with the guidelines to avoid disqualification.

In his remarks, the President of the University of Lagos Students’ Union (ULSU), Bolaji Akinpelu, encouraged aspirants to view leadership as an opportunity for service rather than personal gain.
He noted that effective leadership requires sacrifice, resilience, commitment, and a willingness to prioritise the welfare of others. He urged students to make good use of the knowledge gained from the sensitisation exercise and wished them success in their aspirations.

The programme also featured an extensive question-and-answer session during which participants sought clarification on eligibility requirements, campaign activities, electoral procedures, and leadership expectations. Officials of the Student Affairs Division addressed the concerns raised and provided additional guidance to prospective candidates.
