A new Executive Council of the Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA), University of Lagos (UNILAG), has been inaugurated with a charge to provide visionary leadership, uphold the interests of postgraduate students, and strengthen engagement with the University community.
The inauguration ceremony was held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at the Faculty of Life Sciences Boardroom. The event was attended by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Johnson Olumuyiwa Agunsoye; officials of the Student Affairs Division including Deputy Dean I, Dr. Jumoke Ogunsanya and Deputy Dean II, Dr. Ridwanullahi Iyanda Abdulganiy; past executive officers of PGSA; as well as a cross-section of staff and students of SPGS, UNILAG.

Addressing the new executives, Professor Agunsoye urged them to lead with integrity, humility, and a strong sense of responsibility. He noted that effective student leadership is measured by service, inclusiveness, and the ability to build consensus.

The DSA encouraged the Council to sustain a culture of peace and constructive engagement, and to resolve issues through dialogue and collaboration. He also advised them to maintain cordial relationships with lecturers, fellow students, and University management.
Similarly, in her goodwill message, Dr. Jumoke Ogunsanya reminded postgraduate students that advanced studies demand intellectual discipline, critical inquiry, and a commitment to producing knowledge that contributes meaningfully to society.

She urged them to embrace the unique rigours of postgraduate education and to focus on academic maturity, independent research, and scholarly excellence, rather than draw comparisons with undergraduate studies.
She also called on students to promote mutual respect, responsible conduct, and collaboration to foster a peaceful and productive academic environment.
The highpoint of the ceremony was the administration of the oath of office by Barrister Olugbemi Adisa of the University’s Legal Unit, formally investing the newly elected executives with the authority of their respective offices.

Delivering his inaugural address, the newly sworn-in President of PGSA, Mr. Olakunle Owolabi, pledged an inclusive and responsive administration anchored on service, transparency, and active engagement with members.

He identified improved access to hostel accommodation, enhanced students’ welfare, stronger unity within the postgraduate community, and more effective communication as key priorities of his administration.
The PGSA President assured members that the Executive Council would work closely with the University management and relevant stakeholders to advance initiatives that improve the postgraduate experience and create an enabling environment for academic and personal development.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks, the formal presentation of the new Executive Council, and a group photograph featuring University officials, past executives, student leaders, and other stakeholders.
