UNILAG Reinforces Inclusive Education with Tablet Donation to Students with Disabilities

Twenty-five (25) students with disabilities at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have received digital tablets to support their learning, communication, and participation in assistive technology initiatives on campus.

The tablets were presented to the beneficiaries courtesy of the AFRETEC Inclusion and Diversity Technical Working Group (ITWG), UNILAG.

The beneficiaries, comprising two students who use wheelchairs and 23 students with visual disabilities, were active participants and innovators in Teams 1 to 5 at the recently concluded Assistive Technology Conference. They are also members of the Inclusive Digital Transformation Club on campus.

The handover ceremony took place on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Makerspace, UNILAG Main Library. In attendance were: AFRETEC UNILAG Coordinator and Director, Adetokunbo Babtunde Sofoluwe Centre for Information Technology and Systems (ABS-CITS), Professor Mohammed Amuda; Dean, Student Affairs, Professor Johnson Agunsoye; Lead, AFRETEC Inclusion and Diversity Technical Working Group, Professor Adekemi Sekoni; and Co-Lead, Dr. Omolola Ogbolumani.

In her remarks, Lead, AFRETEC Inclusion and Diversity Technical Working Group, Professor Adekemi Sekoni reaffirmed the Working Group’s commitment to initiatives that promote accessibility and meaningful participation in the University’s digital environment.

Similarly, AFRETEC UNILAG Coordinator, Professor Amuda highlighted the importance of the initiative in expanding digital access for students with disabilities. He explained that the tablets were secured following a courtesy visit by representatives of the Inclusion and Diversity Technical Working Group to the Dean, Student Affairs.

According to him, the initiative is intended to support the beneficiaries in their academic activities and strengthen their capacity to engage in digital learning and assistive technology innovation.

Receiving the devices, the beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the gesture and pledged to make the best use of the devices.

The initiative underscores the importance of collaboration among University structures in ensuring that digital transformation is accessible and beneficial to all members of the University community.
