A Night of Honours and Reflection:SPGS, UNILAG Celebrates Excellence

The School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Lagos (SPGS, UNILAG), on Sunday, January 25, 2026, hosted a distinguished Awards and Dinner Night at the Jelili Adebisi Omotola (Multipurpose) Hall, celebrating academic excellence, service, and institutional growth.

The prestigious event attracted an array of eminent personalities from across academia, government, and industry, reflecting the stature of both the School and the University. Among the distinguished guests were the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola, OON, FAS; Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Senator Wasiu Eshinlokun, who served as Special Guest of Honour; President of the UNILAG Alumni Association (Worldwide), Engr. Ife Oyedele; Second Vice President of the Association, Mr. Lekan Ajisafe; and the Immediate Past Chairman of Igbogbo–Baiyeku Local Council Development Area, Builder Olusesan Daini. The event also drew senior academics, administrators, alumni, and members of the University community.

In his welcome address, the Dean of School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Abraham Adewale Adepoju Osinubi, described the occasion as both a celebration of excellence and a re-affirmation of the School’s enduring commitment to scholarship and service. He highlighted notable achievements recorded by the School in recent years, particularly in branding, operational efficiency, academic quality assurance, and service delivery.

Professor Osinubi paid glowing tribute to members of staff and stakeholders whose dedication and selfless contributions have continued to strengthen the School’s reputation within the University and across the global academic community.

Delivering her remarks, Professor Ogunsola underscored the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to project and protect the positive image of the University of Lagos and Nigeria, especially in an era shaped by social media narratives. She cautioned against negative portrayals capable of de-marketing the institution and the nation, noting that such narratives ultimately undermine shared achievements and progress.

The University’s first female Vice-Chancellor also commended the School of Postgraduate Studies for its remarkable growth and consistent successes’, assuring the audience of the University’s continued support. She emphasized that the pursuit of excellence at the postgraduate level remains a non-negotiable priority.

In his address, Senator Wasiu Eshinlokun spoke on the importance of postgraduate education and the transformative influence of the University on its alumni. Reflecting on his experience as a graduate of the Master of International Law and Diplomacy programme, he described UNILAG as a defining force in shaping his worldview and public service career.

The Senator pledged his continued support for the University, disclosing that strategic engagements were already underway to further enhance institutional development. In his capacity as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Maritime, he also assured the University of legislative and strategic backing to strengthen the Institute of Maritime Studies and position it as a centre of excellence in maritime education, research, and capacity development.

The Awards and Dinner Night, marked by elegance and pageantry, provided a fitting platform to honour outstanding individuals while reaffirming the School of Postgraduate Studies’ unwavering dedication to academic excellence, innovation, and impactful scholarship. The event concluded on a high note, reinforcing the University of Lagos’ resolve to remain at the forefront of postgraduate education in Nigeria and beyond.
