The Tayo Aderinokun Hall came alive on Friday, April 4, 2025, as the Department of Finance, University of Lagos, hosted a high-profile book launch in honour of Professor Esther Funmilayo Adegbite — Nigeria’s first female Professor of Finance. The occasion drew a distinguished crowd of academics, industry leaders, students, and admirers, all gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of a woman who has blazed a remarkable trail in finance education and research.
The book, Readings on Contemporary Issues in International Finance, Economics and other Management Sciences in Emerging Economies, is a 20-chapter compilation that explores critical subjects confronting emerging economies. It was reviewed by the University’s 12th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS who praised its depth and relevance.
“I am confident that this book will make a significant contribution to the fields of Finance and Management and inspire the next generation of scholars and practitioners who will tackle the challenges of emerging economies”, he remarked.

Chairman of Ikeja Electric Distribution Company, Dr. Kola Adesina, was Chief Launcher of the publication. In his address, he lauded the timeliness of the work, noting its importance in the light of current global economic uncertainties.
“Any construct or concept that has nothing to do with man is of no use,” he said. “This book could not have come at a better time, given the turmoil that the global economy seems to be plunging into on account of the tariff spree of the US President Trump.”
Dr. Adesina further encouraged students to draw inspiration from Professor Adegbite’s illustrious career, urging them to set their sights on excellence. He backed his words with action, generously donating ₦10 million to launch the book — more than enough to buy copies for all students present.

Dr. Abass Shiro, Head of the Finance Department and host of the event, paid glowing tribute to the honouree, highlighting her generosity, dedication, and far-reaching impact on the department and beyond. He urged guests to read the book and provide feedback that would foster further intellectual engagement.
The event featured goodwill messages from a wide array of admirers and colleagues, who spoke fondly of Professor Adegbite’s professionalism, mentorship, and humanity. One of the most touching moments of the day came when her husband publicly described her as a “wonderful wife,” drawing warm applause from the audience.

In her heartfelt response, Professor Adegbite expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming support shown to her and the cause of the book launch. She wished all attendees continued success in their respective careers and lives.
With generous donations, warm tributes, and intellectual excitement, the book launch was more than an academic event — it was a celebration of excellence, legacy, and the power of scholarship to shape the future.

Mama was my Project supervisor in 2010 and lecturer in Unilag. An excellent lecturer to the call and very wonderful to be with at any time. Most of us the students then love to be in Prof. Adegbite lecture because her lecture is always detail. More power and wisdom to care for upcoming students Ma.
Thank you so much Professor Adegbite.
