As part of efforts to ensure adaptability and continuous self-development of students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), two distinguished alumni, Mr. Abayomi Oladipupo Lateef and Mr. Phranklin Audu addressed a webinar centred on career prospects for foreign language enthusiasts on Friday, May 23, 2025.
The webinar on Navigating the Job Market: Career Options and Prospects for Foreign Language Students and Other Language Enthusiasts in the 21st Century, was organized by the Department of European Languages and Integrated Studies, Faculty of Arts in collaboration with the Office of Career Development Services (OCDS), UNILAG.

The Importance of Upskilling and Mentorship
Mr. Audu, a French Language graduate and Social Entrepreneur/Consultant, emphasized the significance of continuous self-development, asserting that a degree alone holds relevance for about five years before becoming outdated. He encouraged students to obtain additional certifications and complementary skills to remain competitive. Underscoring the pivotal role of linguists in global discourse, he remarked, “as a language expert, you are a bridge between nations”.
He also stressed the importance of structured guidance in the form of mentorship, and advised students to carefully select mentors who align with their career aspirations. He clarified that mentorship is a professional relationship rather than a friendship. His words, “your mentor is not your friend. He is there to guide you professionally.” He also encouraged students to volunteer and offer free services to mentors, leveraging those interactions to gain valuable experience and insights.

Exploring Career Paths for Language Enthusiasts
Mr. Lateef, a Russian Language graduate and Assistant Chief Administrative Officer at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), and 2024 Executive Vice-President (North-West) of Junior Chambers International, Nigeria, expanded on the career opportunities available to language students. He urged them to take pride in their linguistic heritage and explore diverse fields, including translation, transcription, content writing, editing, teaching, diplomacy, global trade, and international relations. He reinforced the necessity of continuous skill development and adaptability.
Drawing from his experience, Mr. Lateef highlighted freelancing and entrepreneurship as viable paths, offering students key insights into building successful careers. He stressed goal-setting, personal branding, and the ability to pivot in response to industry trends.
A Platform for Growth and Career Development
Moderated by a student of the Department, Miss Hannah Adeboye, the webinar also featured a presentation on the activities and successes of OCDS, delivered by its Team Lead, Dr. Ayodele Shittu. The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. John Faloju, the Head of the Department of European Languages and Integrated Studies, Faculty of Arts, UNILAG.
The insightful discussion reinforced the need for lifelong learning, professional networking, and strategic mentorship to navigate the evolving job market.
