The Department of Computer Science, University of Lagos, on April 8, 2025, hosted a dynamic Freshers’ Orientation Day in partnership with the Information Security Society of Africa Nigeria (ISSAN) and NOVA Bank. Held at the E303 Design Studio in the Faculty of Social Sciences, the event marked a bold step in shaping students’ understanding of cybersecurity, digital innovation, and career development.
Delivering the keynote, Dr. Martins Ikpehai, Second Vice President of ISSAN, emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity in today’s digital world. “We’ve fully transitioned from analogue to digital processes,” he said. “Cybersecurity is no longer optional, it’s essential.”
Dr. Ikpehai highlighted ISSAN’s long-standing commitment to protecting sensitive information and nurturing young minds in cybersecurity. He encouraged students to pursue relevant certifications in system auditing and security, noting that graduates with strong computing backgrounds are increasingly in demand by top organizations.

He also stressed the life-saving importance of cybersecurity, recounting a chilling incident where a compromised medical system led to patients receiving incorrect treatments.
“Cybersecurity is about more than data – it’s about protecting lives,” he stated.
In her remarks, Head of the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo reinforced the department’s vision of aligning education with global best practices. “We are raising problem-solvers and innovators,” she said. “From the start, we must guide our students through proper orientation, mentorship, and exposure to multidisciplinary collaboration.”
She explained that early investment in talent development is vital to equipping students with the skills to address global challenges through technology.
“Our partnerships with industry leaders like ISSAN and NOVA Bank are deliberate strategies to connect learning with real-world impact,” she added.

Adding to the day’s excitement, a Data Analyst from TeachHustle, Gbadebo Mayomo, engaged students with practical data challenges, rewarding those who showed strong awareness of industry trends.
Students were encouraged to build their professional profiles by joining the Computer Science Development Committee and setting up LinkedIn accounts to kickstart their career journey. “The road to impact starts today,” a speaker affirmed.
The event drew a strong turnout, including departmental staff, student executives, ISSAN and NOVA Bank teams, academic figures such as Mrs. Chika Ojiakor, Professor Asekun, and Professor Uwadia, and a vibrant community of freshmen – all united in laying a solid foundation for the future of tech in Nigeria.
