UNILAG gets new Digital Engineering Lab courtesy of Siemens Energy

Another milestone of the P3P initiative of the Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe-led management of the University of Lagos was delivered on Friday, October 7, 2022, with the commissioning of a new Digital Engineering Laboratory.

The project which is courtesy of an Energy Development Company, Siemens Energy is sited at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Managing Director, Siemens Energy, Seun Suleiman described the new digital laboratory as a demonstration of the company’s commitment to the development of education in Nigeria, in general and Lagos, in particular, being the epicentre hence the choice of UNILAG.

While appreciating the management of the university for its cooperation and input all through the project execution, the Siemens Energy Boss put the cost estimate for the project at N70,000,000 (Seventy million naira) adding that a whopping N20,000,000 (twenty million naira) was also invested in the purchasing of software and training programme for instructors.

He described the new Digital Engineering Laboratory as a full end-to-end project with a sustainable plan to guarantee full utilization and maximization.

Suleiman reiterated the commitment of Siemens Energy to its core objective of Education, Socials and Environment and assured the University of Lagos of continued collaboration in terms of sustainable projects and mutual cooperation for the purpose of all-round development.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, appreciated the management of Siemens Energy for delivering the Digital Laboratory project.

While appreciating the Director, Distance Learning Institute, Professor Uchenna Udeani and other members of the Faculty of Engineering for their input in ensuring the successful delivery of the new Digital Laboratory project, Prof. Ogundipe assured that the new world-class facility would be maximized to its full potential for the training of students as well as grooming of innovative ideas and technological solutions for all-round national development.

He also charged students to avail themselves of the potential opportunities which the new Digital Laboratory would avail them, especially in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine and other areas.

The delegation from Siemens Energy and principal officers of the University of Lagos were all accorded a facility tour of the new Digital Laboratory during which the Project Manager, Mr. Samuel Abolade gave an illustration of various projects and assured that the end product is to equip users with capacities for simulations of different types.

He also announced plans for a Train-the-Trainer Programme through which selected faculty members would be trained as instructors who would, in turn, serve as trainers and instructors for students and other users of the new Digital Engineering Laboratory.

The management team of Siemens Energy was earlier at the office of the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, on a courtesy visit where they were received by the Vice-Chancellor and some principal officers of the University including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics and Research; Professor Bola Oboh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, Professor Lucian Obinna Chukwu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, Director, Academic Planning, Professor Mopelola Olusakin among others.
