The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, hosted an awareness campaign of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
All roads led to the Nurudeen Alao Auditorium of the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of UNILAG where students converged for the awareness campaign which was held under the auspices of the Student Affairs Division, UNILAG.

NELFund officials led by the Board Secretary and General Counsel, Funmilayo Alagbada, took turns to address students on the eligibility requirements, terms and conditions, procedures, possible challenges and potential benefits of the Loan scheme to the tertiary education subsector.
NELFund Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi took the students through the imperativeness of the loan scheme while the NELFund Head of ICT, Wale Ogunleye gave a practical demonstration of the application process and stages.

Quality time was dedicated to addressing queries from UNILAG Students who took turns to share their experiences and raise concerns on payments, pending applications and other salient issues regarding their loan requests.

In his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, UNILAG, Professor Musa Obalola who received the NELFund officials on behalf of the University Management, said the awareness campaign became imperative due to the concerns being raised by UNILAG students.

While enunciating the national importance of NELFund to every student in tertiary institutions across the country, Prof Obalola described the student loan scheme as a soothing intervention and a child of necessity especially when viewed against the backdrop of the prevalent economic realities, and need to promote and protect the tertiary education sector.

The Student Loans Act, 2023, which established NELFUND, was signed into law in April 2024. Established by the Federal Government of Nigeria to address financial barriers in higher education through the provision of interest-free loans, the programme portal opened for applications in May 2024.
