UNILAG Hosts Security Awareness Seminar, Charts Path to Safer Campus Environment

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit has re-affirmed its commitment to a secure and conducive learning environment by hosting a seminar on: The Role of Quality Assurance Officers in the University of Lagos Security Framework.

Held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the Senate Chamber, UNILAG, the well-attended session brought together quality assurance officers and senior security officers of the university to discuss challenges and strategies for campus safety.

Delivering the keynote address, Coordinator of UNILAG Security Unit, Mr. David Omotosho shared insights into the renewed focus on proactive response, inter-agency collaboration, and professional excellence in safeguarding the institution.

“Since assuming office, I have re-engineered our security services to emphasize teamwork, timely response to distress calls, and synergy with relevant security networks,” Mr. Omotosho said. “We must never take sensitive information for granted.”

Highlighting the unique security dynamics of UNILAG waterfront location and its proximity to neighbouring communities, he stressed that the demand for vigilance among security personnel remained non-negotiable.

In response to questions from attendees, Mr. Omotosho underscored the importance of functional CCTV systems, continuous training, and modern equipment to boost operational effectiveness. He revealed that efforts were underway to attract donor support to address gaps in infrastructure and resources.

He also acknowledged the strain caused by the limited number of security personnel, exacerbated by retirements, and explained that the university has had to augment the workforce with men of the Nigerian Legion. Despite these constraints, he maintained that collaboration among students, staff, and management remained essential to sustaining a crime-free university environment.

Mr. Omotosho proposed key solutions, including recruiting additional staff, improving remuneration and welfare, and adopting biometric vehicle passes to curb vehicle theft. He affirmed the commitment to meet international standards of campus security.

“Modern training is crucial to combat sophisticated crimes,” he noted. “No one can give what they do not have. Continuous capacity-building will sharpen our surveillance skills and help us set a benchmark worthy of global admiration.”

Representing the Director of the Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit, Professor Olufemi Shuaib, the Deputy Director, Dr. Eno Akrawak reiterated the Unit’s dedication to upholding uncompromising standards aligned with the future-ready agenda of Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS.

She disclosed that the Servicom Unit, in partnership with Globacom, is set to deploy networked office phones in strategic locations to enhance communication, including five units designated for the Security Unit. According to her, plans are also underway to install complaint boxes and establish an integrated campus food market to tackle the rising cost of food.

In her closing remarks, Coordinator of the Quality Assurance team at CMUL, Professor Kofo Soyebi, described the seminar as a remarkable convergence of scholarship and practical knowledge. She commended the depth of the presentation and urged that the recommendations be forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor for swift implementation.

“Today has been significantly enriching,” she said. “The insights shared will contribute to building a stronger security architecture in our University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride.”

The event concluded with resounding applause, reflecting a shared commitment to ensuring that UNILAG remains a safe, forward-looking institution for all.
