UNILAG Mech. Engr. Top Fliers To Get N5 Million Naira Scholarship Courtesy Late Prof S.O. Talabi’s Family

Family of the Late Professor Sulaiman Owolabi Talabi, a former Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Friday, November 29, 2024, announced a N5, 000,000.00 Scholarship Award (Five Million Naira) to be issued to the best graduating students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UNILAG.

The Scholarship Award announced by Dr. Sola Talabi, a son of Late Professor Talabi, marks the formal institution of the Talabi Mechanical Engineering Award in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UNILAG.

According to Dr. Talabi, “the Talabi Mechanical Engineering Award would also factor in the possibility of support for overseas studies for winners among other opportunities which the family is still putting together”.

The announcement of the scholarship was the highpoint of a Special Seminar delivered by Dr. Sola Talabi who is a Nuclear Energy Consultant and Academic Director, Nuclear Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The Seminar was held in honour of his late father and doyen of the UNILAG Department of Mechanical Engineering; Professor Sulaiman Owolabi Talabi.

Dr. Talabi’s presentation on Nuclear Energy is the New Fire took the gathering comprising staff and students across the Faculty of Engineering, through numerous potentials in nuclear energy. He also spoke exhaustively about the challenges in nuclear power, and suggested solutions especially along new designs and innovations which could make nuclear energy usable for people.

The seminar which was held at the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Hall, provided a platform for glowing tributes to be paid to the Late Professor S.O. Talabi especially by staff of the Faculty and Mechanical Engineering Department.

The Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Samson Adeosun; Acting Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Adekunle Adelaja and former Dean of Faculty, Professor Sodiq Obanisola, took turns to share fond memories of the late Professor Talabi whom they described as an embodiment of virtues. They noted that the late renowned academic will be greatly missed due to his distinguished leadership, large-heart, decency, openness, courage and constant availability for support and help.

Late Professor Sulaiman Owolabi Talabi who joined the University of Lagos services in 1976, served in various capacities until his retirement. He died on Sunday, October 6, 2024.
