A Lecturer at the Department of Journalism, Broadcasting and Media Studies, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, University of Lagos, Dr. Unwana Samuel Akpan has achieved a significant milestone in Nigerian academia. He has been ranked among Nigeria’s top 500 researchers for 2026.
According to Scholarly Output in Nigeria (2022–2026), Dr. Unwana is listed at number four hundred and eighty four (484), with sixteen (16) publications, the most recent appearing in 2025.
He recently published two major edited volumes:
- Theorizing Nigerian Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Communication. Media, and Culture. Published by Palgrave Macmillan, New York.
- Indigenous Nigerian Communication and Media Theories. Published by Peter Lang. Switzerland
These two volumes mark the first comprehensive scholarly contributions on Nigerian Indigenous Knowledge Systems within the field, with contributions from academics across all six geopolitical zones of the country. Initiated in 2021, this project sought to bring together leading and emerging Nigerian scholars in communication and media studies. The goal was to develop theoretical frameworks rooted in the everyday cultural and traditional experiences of Nigerians.
