A team of 500 level students of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos (UNILAG) have emerged winners of the Hydrography Research Competition.

The team comprising Mr. Samuel Adeboye, Mr. Ayomide Paul Oyewole, Mr. Sheriff Abiola Adewuyi, Miss Ozioma Helen Orji and Miss Abimbola Faith Ewenla won the competition with their research paper titled: Designing a Sustainable Seabed Mapping Strategy for Nigeria’s Coastal Water. Their outstanding submission led the rankings among twelve (12) universities selected from the six (6) geo-political zones in Nigeria.
The winners were announced at the World Hydrography Day and 2025 West African Hydrographic Summit organised by the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA) in collaboration with the Nigerian Hydrographic Society (NHS), from Thursday, June 19 to Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Abuja Continental Hotel.
In recognition of their achievement, the team was officially presented to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on Thursday, July 10, 2025 by the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Samson Adeosun along with Dr. Alfred Alademomi (Sub-Dean), Dr. Emeka Epuh (Acting HOD, Surveying and Geoinformatics), Dr. Adekunle Hamid-Mosaku and Dr. Emmanuel Ayodele.




The delegation was pleasantly received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Afolabi Lesi who urged them to continue to strive for excellence, and to pay it forward by mentoring their fellow students.
Celebrated annually on June 21, World Hydrography Day celebrates the contributions of hydrographers and underscores the importance of hydrographic data in promoting maritime safety, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development of marine ecosystems.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on behalf of staff and students of the University, congratulates the quintet for winning the competition and making the University proud and wishes them success in their academic endeavours.
