The University of Lagos (UNILAG), through its Staff Training and Development Unit, has concluded a two-day capacity development programme aimed at enhancing the professionalism and operational efficiency of its security personnel.
The sessions, which held at the Faculty of Science Boardroom from Monday, August 11 to Tuesday, August 12, 2025, brought together experts from academia, law enforcement, and emergency response.
Management’s Commitment to Security
Opening the training, Director of the Staff Training and Development Unit, Mrs. Aderonke Asiwaju, described the initiative as “long overdue,” noting that the University had been pushing for such capacity building in response to the rising sophistication of criminal activities in recent times. She commended the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, for prioritising security sensitisation in order to safeguard lives and property on campus.



Day One: Security Awareness and Legal Responsibilities
UNILAG Security Unit Coordinator, Mr. Omotosho, spoke on Security Awareness and Orientation, stressing proactive measures such as surveillance, access control, and CCTV monitoring to counter campus security challenges.
Associate Professor of Public Law, Dr. Abiodun Odusote, addressed the Legal Limitations and Responsibilities of Security Operatives, outlining the differences between private security and police powers, the importance of staying within the law, and the need for gender-appropriate arrest procedures.
The Divisional Police Officer of Sabo Police Station, SP Comfort Alabi, educated participants on Crime Charges, Investigation, and Criminal Procedures, highlighting proper evidence handling and stronger collaboration with law enforcement agencies.



Day Two: Emotional Intelligence, Technology, and Incident Reporting
The second day featured four specialised sessions:
• Emotional Intelligence and Security Operations – Dr. Sylvester Atiri (Department of Psychology, UNILAG) explained the role of emotional intelligence in decision-making, conflict resolution, and integrating empathy into security protocols.
• Application of Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Security Operations – Mr. Abiola Olatubosun (ABS-CITS, UNILAG) showcased the benefits of AI and modern technology in crime prevention, problem-solving, and maintaining a positive operational attitude.
• Emergency Response and Crisis Management – Mr. Femi Giwa (Lagos State Command & Control Centre) outlined principles and procedures for effective emergency response and inter-agency coordination.
• Incident Report Writing – Dr. Waziri Adisa (Department of Sociology, UNILAG) trained participants on gathering information, documenting scenes, and producing accurate, concise, and complete reports.




A Safer, Smarter UNILAG
By the close of the training, participants had gained practical skills in surveillance, legal compliance, emotional intelligence, crisis management, and report writing.
The programme reaffirmed UNILAG’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as the “University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride” – safe, secure, and conducive for learning and research.
