The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Window on America has taken its campaign to promote the ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to students of the International School, UNILAG (ISL) through an awareness session held on Monday, August 31, 2026.
The session focused on equipping students with practical guidance on using AI as a tool for learning, creativity, and problem-solving, while avoiding its potential risks and misuse.
Speaking at the session, the Coordinator of UNILAG Window on America, Dr. Tenny Egwuatu, urged the students to use AI responsibly. She cautioned them against practices such as using the technology to cheat, sharing personal or sensitive information on AI platforms, and accepting AI-generated information without verification.
She encouraged the students to “Think before you prompt, post, or share,” using a five-step framework designed to promote responsible digital behaviour.
The framework requires users to ask the following five questions:
- True: Have I verified the information?
- Helpful: Does it support learning?
- Identity: Is anyone’s privacy at risk?
- Necessary: Should AI perform the task?
- Kind: Could the action harm someone?
Participants were also introduced to a five-step response framework for dealing with AI-related problems: Stop, Save evidence, Tell a trusted adult, Report, and Support affected parties.
The session highlighted some of the potential dangers associated with AI, including fake content, scams, cyberbullying, and algorithmic bias. Students were particularly advised against uploading sensitive or private information to AI platforms.
An interactive segment further engaged the students with practical scenarios designed to test their understanding of responsible AI use.
The awareness session underscored the importance of developing responsible digital habits among young people as AI becomes increasingly integrated into learning and everyday life.
