The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Male Football Team, popularly known as the UNILAG Marines, has received a significant boost ahead of future competitions following the donation of training kits by a distinguished alumnus, Mr. Gbenga Akinpelu, Founder of Ben-Fit Gym International.
The donated items included footballs, training bibs, cones, and other essential training equipment aimed at enhancing the team’s training sessions and overall performance. The donation was facilitated by the Deputy Registrar, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mr. Abolade Akinwunmi.
The presentation ceremony took place on Monday, June 1, 2026, with the donation formally received on behalf of the University Management by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Foluso Afolabi-Lesi.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Afolabi-Lesi expressed appreciation to the donor for the thoughtful gesture, noting that the sports kits would enhance the team’s preparation and boost the morale of the players.
He also commended Mr. Akinpelu for his continued support of the University, particularly his contributions towards improving the gym facilities at the UNILAG Sports Centre.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor described the alumnus’ commitment as exemplary and encouraged other graduates to emulate such acts of giving back to their alma mater.
In his remarks, Mr. Akinpelu described the donation as a reflection of his enduring love for UNILAG and his desire to contribute to the development of student sports.
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote excellence and provide opportunities for young talents to thrive.
Following the formal presentation, the kits were handed over to the Head Coach of the UNILAG Marines, Mr. Babatunde Oluwo, who expressed gratitude to the donor and assured that the items would be put to effective use in preparing the team for future engagements.
