The University of Lagos Women Society (ULWS) has commenced activities marking its 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades of friendship, service, resilience and contributions to the development of the University of Lagos and society.

The flag-off ceremony, held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 in the ULWS School (ULWSS) compound, brought together University Management, past Presidents and founding members of the Society, staff, students and distinguished guests.

Education, Character and the Future
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola, OON, FAS, congratulated ULWS on its 60th anniversary and commended its enduring contributions to education and society.

Prof. Ogunsola noted that while technology and artificial intelligence would increasingly shape the future of education, teachers would remain essential to developing the human qualities needed to navigate a rapidly changing world. She urged educators to move beyond rote memorisation and equip students with the ability to ask questions, process information, think critically and apply knowledge meaningfully.

She emphasised that as access to information expands, character and values would become increasingly important. She therefore encouraged ULWS to continue investing in young people by providing strong foundations in knowledge, values and character.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the significant contributions of women to education, child development and societal advancement, noting their longstanding role in responding to critical societal needs and laying foundations for the growth of children and communities.

She challenged ULWS to look beyond geographical boundaries and position itself as a philosophy and force capable of extending its impact across Nigeria and beyond. She also called for greater recognition and improved welfare for teachers, stressing the importance of valuing and rewarding educators at all levels.

Prof. Ogunsola further encouraged teachers to embrace lifelong learning and continuously update their knowledge and skills to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. “Lifelong learning is not for students only; it is also for you,” she said.
Six Decades of Service and Impact
Performing the flag-off, the President of the University of Lagos Women Society (ULWS), Dr. Taiwo F. Ipaye, described the Diamond Jubilee as a celebration of six decades of wisdom, resilience and selfless service.

Tracing the ULWSS’s history to 1967, when its nursery school began with 10 pupils in a prefabricated wooden classroom, Dr. Ipaye noted that some of the pioneer pupils had since become grandparents, with their grandchildren now attending the school.
Dr Ipaye highlighted the Society’s growth with a full-fledged crèche, nursery and primary school, alongside initiatives such as pupil grants, academic awards for outstanding undergraduates, the Youth Connect programme, a 540-bed-space hostel and a relaxation garden opposite the school.
Dr. Ipaye paid tribute to the founding mothers and successive leaders for their contributions to the Society’s development, while appreciating the University Management and Anniversary Planning Committee, chaired by Dr. Hope Nwawolo, for their support. She urged members and stakeholders to uphold the Society’s legacy of compassion and service and to participate actively in the anniversary activities.
Looking Ahead
In her address, the Chairperson of the ULWS Anniversary Planning Committee, Dr. Hope Nwawolo described the anniversary as a significant milestone in the history of the Society, founded six decades ago by 15 visionary women.

She noted that successive generations had sustained and expanded the founding vision through their dedication, generosity, time and talents. She paid tribute to the founding mothers, past Presidents, executives, committee members and all members who had contributed to the Society’s growth.
According to her, the anniversary will feature a year-long programme of activities aimed at celebrating the Society’s achievements, strengthening bonds among members and inspiring future generations.
She expressed appreciation to the University Management, special guests and staff for their continued support of the Society.
