The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Management remains committed to providing a safe, secure, and conducive environment for learning, teaching, research, community service, and administration.
While the University maintains a robust security framework, safety is a shared responsibility. All students, staff, business operators, residents, visitors, and other stakeholders are therefore urged to remain vigilant and adopt proactive measures to safeguard themselves and the University community by adhering to the following guidelines:
- Movement at Night
Night Crawling: Avoid unnecessary movement around campus at night.
Use the Buddy System: Where night movement is unavoidable, walk in groups of at least two or three persons.
Stick to Well-Lit Routes: Avoid isolated, bushy, or poorly lit areas. Always use designated and well-illuminated pathways.
Plan Night Study Activities Wisely: If you use libraries or lecture halls for evening study, conclude early enough and return to your hostel or residence in the company of others. - Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Maintain Situational Awareness, Stay Alert: Pay attention to your environment at all times. Avoid distractions such as excessive mobile phone use or wearing headphones with both earphones plugged in as this may prevent you from noticing approaching persons or unusual activity, particularly during the early morning or at night.
Report Unusual Activity: Be observant and promptly report suspicious individuals, unusual movements, loitering, or gatherings around hostels, lecture theatres, offices, and recreational areas.
Exercise Digital Caution: Avoid sharing your real-time location, travel plans, or displays of valuable possessions on social media.
Secure Offices, Laboratories, and Hostels: Ensure hostel rooms, offices, laboratories, and other facilities are properly locked whenever they are unattended, even for short periods. - Business Owners and Vendors
Observe Approved Operating Hours: Businesses and vendors must comply strictly with approved campus operating hours. Unauthorised overnight stays within business premises are prohibited.
Watch for Suspicious Items: Be alert to unattended bags, packages, or other items around your premises. Do not attempt to open, inspect, or move them. Report such items immediately to the nearest security post. - Vehicle and Traffic Safety
Secure Your Vehicle: Ensure vehicles are properly locked and security discs kept safe at all times.
Avoid Rides from Strangers: Do not accept rides from unknown persons or unregistered vehicles, whether within or outside the campus. Use approved transportation services whenever possible. - The Golden Rule: Report Suspicious Activities Immediately
If You See Something, Say Something: Trust your instincts. If a person, activity, or situation appears suspicious, report it immediately rather than assuming someone else will.
Keep Emergency Contacts Handy: Save and memorise the University’s emergency security numbers for quick access during emergencies.
