The line up of activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the University of Lagos Staff School (ULSS) continued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 with a colourful Cultural Day fiesta.
Held within the ULSS compound, the fiesta highlighted traditional costumes, food, music, dance and culture of the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. It also featured a minute of silence in honour of Nigeria’s military personnel who recently lost their lives in an aircraft crash, with prayers offered for the peaceful repose of the departed.





In attendance were staff and pupils of the school along with parents, wellwishers and dignitaries such as the Sub-Dean, Faculty of Education, Dr. Sabina Oyebola Akinoso; Head of Department, Human Kinetics and Health Education, Professor Mojisola Adewunmi; Principal, UNILAG International School, Mr. Kolawole Amusan; ULSS PTA executive members, among others.



Board Chairman Commends Pupils, Teachers and Parents
Speaking at the event, the Board Chairman of ULSS, Professor Joseph Awoyinfa, commended the pupils for their impressive performances and appreciated the teachers for their dedication in preparing them for the celebration. He also acknowledged the support of parents, describing the pupils as “leaders of tomorrow” and urging parents and teachers to continue providing the guidance necessary for their growth and development.

Prof. Awoyinfa, who also served as the representative the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola, OON, FAS; reaffirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening the school’s foundation and promised improvements to its sporting facilities, particularly the football field, to provide pupils with a more conducive environment for sports.
Celebrating Culture and Heritage
The Head Teacher of ULSS, Mrs. Eunice Adedoyin Akinade, described the Cultural Day as an opportunity for pupils to reconnect with their roots through traditional dressing, food, arts, music and indigenous languages.


Mrs. Akinade appreciated the parents, teachers, University media team and other stakeholders whose contributions helped make the event a success.
Encouragement for the Next Generation
In her goodwill message, Mrs. Anuchi Maurene, one of the pioneering pupils of the school, congratulated the school on its 60th anniversary and recalled that the institution opened its doors on October 10, 1966. She urged the pupils to take their education seriously and develop themselves academically, culturally and through sports and other extracurricular activities.

Describing the pupils as the future of Nigeria, Mrs. Maurene encouraged them to respect their teachers, remain disciplined and strive for excellence.
Traditional Ruler Commends School
Representing the Olu of Iwaya Kingdom, Chief Ayorinde Akeem (Baba Oja General of the entire Yaba), congratulated the school and commended its record of discipline and excellence.

Chief Ayorinde described culture as a way of life reflected in music, food, dressing and language. He praised the pupils for showcasing Nigerian culture while also demonstrating an appreciation of international cultures. He appreciated the teachers, parents and pupils for their contributions and prayed for continued blessings on the school and the University of Lagos.
